Types of Accreditation
Regional Accreditation
There are two types of accreditation – regional and national. Regional accreditation is the most general, covering schools across the country through regions. There are 6 regional accrediting institutions recognized by the United States Department of Education. If your school of choice is recognized by a regional accrediting institution, you can rest assured that you will have the opportunity to make the most out of your college education.
National Accreditation
National accreditation focuses on various types of studies or methods of learning. For example, there could be an accrediting institution that specializes strictly on education and will accredit the education degrees at certain schools. There could also be an accrediting institution that specializes in online degree programs. National accreditation reviews schools around the country, regardless of location.
The best way to recognize whether or not the accreditation posted on a school’s website or in their brochure is to consult the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). They have a great online database which helps you recognize legitimate accrediting institutions and also helps to note the ones that are not legitimate.
Most schools that offer “instant diplomas” for little work and less money are usually “accredited” by these false institutions. It’s important to know which ones will be worth your time and money. Accreditation sorts the good schools from the not-so-good and can be the biggest deciding factor when choosing the best college for your needs.
