This is why it is important to know that the college orĀ university you are spending your time and money at is worth the cost. All learning institutes promise that they’re the best choice for you, but not all of them live up to their claims.
There are safeguards against this and agencies there to guide you in finding a reputable college and education. One of these safeguards is accreditation, for which there are accrediting agencies that review and grant accreditation to colleges and universities around the US.
Below are the six regional accrediting agencies in the United States:
Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
New England Association of Schools and Colleges
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
Western Association of Schools and Colleges
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
These accrediting agencies are privately owned, meaning that aren’t run by the government. However they use the government’s education guidelines and recommendations in deciding what colleges are granted accreditation and those which are refused. These guidelines are quite stringent and are designed to give a benchmark for universities and colleges to strive toward and maintain a high quality of education and learning.
Accreditation is used for on-campus bricks and mortar establishments and also for the various online universities and colleges. Some online learning institutes are 100% online based while others are departments of the traditional colleges.
For online colleges, the accreditation is a way for the prospective student to see if the college is worth their time and effort, and it is highly recommended that you be very wary of unaccredited colleges and universities. Search through blogs and forums to see what other students and/or staff have said.
